The Bakery
A Victorian Baker’s working day was a long one - it began at 4am, seven days a week.
Surprisingly, a baker’s most popular products would not usually be the fresh loaves but yesterday’s loaves (settled loaves). Mothers are keen to buy these as they are not only half the price, but the bread will go further… family members are more likely to ask for more if the loaf is fresh and warm, but seconds will very rarely be requested when the bread is going stale!
FUN FACT - Victorian criminals who stole from bakeries were known as ‘Pudding Snammers’
